What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

July 16, 2026 · 7 min read · SM Marteq

Not long ago, searching for something meant scanning a page of ten links and picking one. Today you often get a single answer instead. You ask Google a question and a summary appears at the top. You ask ChatGPT and it just tells you what to do. The list of options is gone, replaced by one response. Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the work of making sure your brand is inside that response.

If your customers now get their answer without scrolling, the old goal of ranking third or fourth on a results page does not help you much. What matters is whether you are named in the answer itself. That shift is why AEO has become its own discipline.

What an answer engine actually is

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a direct, composed answer rather than a list of links to go read. A few examples you already use:

What they share is the important part. They all pick a small amount of information, present it as the answer, and leave everything else out. AEO is about being the information they pick.

How AEO is different from SEO

Traditional SEO was built for a world of ranked links. You optimized a page so it would appear high on the results, and the user chose from what they saw. AEO assumes the user will not see a list at all. So the target changes:

SEO asks "does my page show up in the list." AEO asks "am I in the answer the user actually reads."

AEO, GEO, and SEO: how they fit together

These terms overlap, and you do not need to obsess over the boundaries. Here is a simple way to hold them in your head:

TermFocusThe question it answers
SEORanking pages in search resultsCan people find my page?
AEOBeing the direct answer to a questionAm I in the answer, across search and AI?
GEOBeing recommended by generative AI assistantsDoes ChatGPT or Claude name my brand?

Think of AEO as the broad idea, being the answer wherever answers are given, and GEO as the part of it that lives specifically inside AI assistants. The work behind them is largely the same, which is good news. Improve one and you tend to improve the others.

What actually helps you win the answer

Answer engines are looking for information they can trust and quote cleanly. The practices that help are practical, not mysterious:

How to know if it is working

You cannot improve what you do not check. The honest way to measure AEO is to ask the questions your customers ask and see what comes back. Do you appear in the answer? Are you described accurately? Who shows up instead of you? Because answers vary over time and between engines, this is something to track regularly, not check once.

The move from links to answers is not slowing down. The brands that treat "being the answer" as a real goal, and measure it, will quietly take the attention that used to be spread across a whole page of results. That is the opportunity AEO points at.

Are you in the answer, or left out of it?
