Ask a friend where to buy running shoes and they might say Nike or a local shop they trust. Ask ChatGPT the same thing and it gives you a tidy list of five brands, ranked, with a sentence on why each one fits. For a growing share of buyers, that second conversation is now the starting point. Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is simply the work of making sure your brand shows up in it.
If SEO was about ranking on a page of blue links, GEO is about being named inside a written answer. Nobody scrolls a list of ten results anymore when the assistant just tells them what to pick. The brands that get mentioned win attention. The rest are invisible, no matter how good their website looks.
For twenty years the map of online discovery was stable. You optimized pages, earned links, and climbed the Google results. Then assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini started answering questions directly, pulling from what they had learned and, increasingly, from live web sources. People stopped clicking as often. They read the answer and moved on.
That created a new question for every business: not "where do I rank" but "does the AI even mention me." GEO is the discipline that grew up around answering it.
They overlap more than people expect, but the goals are not the same. A few key differences:
The shift in plain terms: you used to compete for a spot on the page. Now you compete for a spot in the sentence.
No model publishes its exact recipe, but the patterns are consistent across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The brands that get named tend to share a few traits:
Before you change anything, find out where you stand. Pick the handful of questions a real customer would ask an assistant in your category, run them, and read the answers closely. Note whether you appear, in what position, how you are described, and which competitors show up instead. That baseline tells you whether GEO is a quick fix or a longer project for your brand.
Everything after that is response to what you found: fixing how you are described, getting mentioned in the sources that matter, and rechecking to see if the needle moved. GEO is less a one time campaign and more an ongoing habit, the same way SEO became.
